More than 800 people are killed each year on Indiana’s highways. Here are some ways to stay safe.
Two women are dead after an apparent single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 31 in Edinburgh, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.
Rita Britton, 68, of Franklin, and Vicki Alexander, 75, of Greenwood, died after their car crashed into a ditch between Ind. 252 and County Road 650S shortly before 2 p.m.
A witness on the scene told police he was traveling south on U.S. 31 when he saw a vehicle swerve across the yellow line several times. The vehicle then appeared to overcorrect and “ended up sliding across 2 lanes of travel and hitting a ditch at a very high rate of speed,” according to an accident report.
Another witness said the car appeared to be going 90 mph prior to the crash. The posted speed limit in the area is 60 mph.
Britton was thrown from the vehicle, and Alexander was trapped inside the car. Police found both women unconscious and transported them to a local hospital, where they later died.
The crash report notes both women suffered head injuries but does not say who was driving at the time.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
