A bicyclist died Sunday night after being hit by an Anderson police vehicle on Highway 273, authorities said.
The collision occurred around 9 p.m. near northbound Highway 273 south of Thomas Road, investigators said. The officer was driving north in the number 1 northbound lane.
“The officer’s patrol unit collided with the bicyclist who also was traveling within the number 1 lane northbound on Highway 273,” the Anderson Police Department posted on its Facebook page. “The officer involved in the collision was not injured and initiated lifesaving efforts on the bicyclist as additional officers and paramedics responded to the scene. The portion of the highway is not lit by streetlights.”
While this was happening, an Anderson police sergeant was doing traffic control and had parked his patrol vehicle south of the collision. The vehicle had its lights on, police said.
A sedan going north on Highway 273 didn’t slow down and collided with the patrol vehicle, causing major damage to both vehicles, police said. The person driving the vehicle received major injuries and was taken to the hospital, police said. The person’s name has not been released.
The sergeant was able to jump out of the way but he also was injured and was treated and released from the hospital, investigators said.
Meanwhile, the person on the bicycle died at the scene, investigators said. The name of the cyclist is not being released until family members are notified of the death.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
The names of the officer and the sergeant involved have not been released.
